[Tutorial] How to Create and Manager your Aeternity (AE) Wallet with a Ledger Nano S

Aeternity (AE) is a state-of-the-art blockchain that enables high-speed transactions, highly scalable smart contracts, and decentralized oracles through its advanced distributed computing platform. Aeternity was one of the first blockchains to implement state channels, allowing its smart contracts to execute off-chain, massively increasing the scalability of the network while keeping fees down.

With Aeternity due to complete transition to its mainnet in late 2019, and a mass coin distribution event planned for the same year, this dApp platform may be a sleeping beast just waiting to take off. If you are an Aeternity (AE) holder, you might be looking for a secure wallet solution to help you manage your AE without sacrificing on the convenience expected from a top-tier wallet solution.

Thankfully, Aeternity is one of the few projects to have considered the importance of safety with their official wallet — offering compatibility with Ledger hardware wallets including the Ledger Nano S. Together with the Ledger Nano S and the Aeternity base app, you will be able to securely access your crypto portfolio from anywhere, while protecting your potential riches if Aeternity booms again in future.

To complete this tutorial, you will need the Aeternity app installed on your Ledger device, and will need access to a computer with a Chrome or Opera internet browser.

Make sure to update your “Ledger Live” App from here:

Connecting Ledger with the Aeternity Base App

Step 1: To begin connecting your Ledger device with the Aeternity Base App, you will first need to head to the base app site:

Step 2: Here, click the ‘Connect an account’ option in the top right corner.

In the ‘Connect an account to start’ screen, select the ‘LEDGER’ option and connect your Ledger to your computer using an official Ledger USB cable.

Once your Ledger is connected, enter your PIN to unlock the device, and open the Aeternity app.

Step 3: After opening the Aeternity app, the Aeternity base app wallet will detect this, and will bring up a prompt asking you to ‘Create your address on the Ledger’.

While this screen is shown, your Ledger Nano S will also display your Aeternity address. If the address shown on your Ledger device matches that shown in the base app, then click the right Ledger button once.

Note that your Ledger address will be different from the one displayed in our example, your address will be personal to you.

Step 4: After confirming, you will automatically be logged into your new Aeternity account, and will be free to manage your AE through the Aeternity base app.
If you wish to add additional accounts, you will be able to repeat the above steps using the ‘Crete a new account’ option under the ‘LEDGER’ options.

Step 5: After logging into your account via the Aeternity base app and Ledger Nano S, you will be able to send tokens using the ‘SEND’ tab, receive tokens in the RECEIVE’ tab, and interact with Aeternity dApps through the ‘APPS’ tab.

That’s it! You have now created your new Aeternity wallet on your Ledger Nano S, and are able to access it through the Aeternity base app!

If you’re feeling adventurous, you could then begin exploring more advanced Aeternity features, such as participating in the voting system and playing around with the testnet!
